Wi Fish - IOT
An external product was chosen to be designed rather than a tackle box as a whole with the integrated technology because user research proved that father's pass on their tackle boxes onto their sons - and this becomes a family heirloom passed down through generation, if the technology were to evolve it would require purchase of a brand new tackle box unit - making the heirloom null.
This project was to assist the New Old Age in undertaking social activities. Arduino was used to demonstrate Status, Attention and Feedback to enable a social activity. My boss (at work) was my "primary user" fitting the profile 55-60 yo Business owner & tech savvy - this allowed in depth primary research to be conducted.
My individually designed fishing product was integrated into an ecosystem with 2 other similar products - the hiking show and a photo frame for s secondary user (Fishermen's wife?).
Designing the product to fit well into it's ecosystem was essential to the success and design dependent.
The first 5 weeks in conjunction with research occuring in the background was spend learning to code Arduino and using various components to achieve the end goal. Brain storming was also conducted to visualise User experience in the form of Status, Attention & Feedback to support a social activity.
User experience was at the highest priority and "Natural Gestural Inputs" were utilised where possible to make the product use as easy and natural as possible.
Tackle box prototypes were Laser cut to demonstrate the use of product with the photo sensors located inside each box, and the LED changing colours on the Arduino Board.

The Object-Behavior-Scenario concept was used to break down the functionality of the product so that it could be better designed for user experience within the context.

The sensor is housed in the LED clip and removed to be placed in the tackle box, while the LED clip is latched onto the outside of the Tackle box.
The product was designed to fit into the context of the tackle box, it would have to be waterproof to some extent as the senors are placed in with the tackle inside the box. The product is Ergonomically shaped and the colour, and look blend well with the type of tackle which is stored in the box.
Testing the Clip on Small and Large Tackle boxes and also the sensors would not have worked if the box lid was transparent as is evident here - the photo sensor would constantly be detecting light. The product would not be functional in this context.
